i recently ordered a 12 month xbox live membership off amazon (cheaper) and am wondering whether it would work here in Australia? Whether different currencies would make a difference?

Live Gold cards are generally universal and work anywhere. It's MS Points cards that usually only work if you get one from the same country or region as your gamertag.
